Holiday cottages, camping sites, hotels, leisure activities, foie-gras, gastronomy, restaurants, rela estate for sale.... all you need for unforgettable holidays or to settle in the Dordogne - Perigord...
Carlux, perched on its rocky spur is located 12 km from Sarlat, medieval capital town of the Perigord Noir; this charming village borders three regions rich in History and Culture: Sarladais, Haut Quercy and Bas Limousin. Overlooked by the ruins of a splendid feudal fortress, its beautiful stone houses and alleyways create a really typical Perigord village. Do not miss the rare Saracen chimney dating back to the 11th century, the covered market place -as old as the castle, the Sainte-Catherine church and its polychrome pieta.
The ruins of the castle now display three terraces: in its Southern part, archeologists have discovered the remains of a Roman donjon; the remains of three walls mark a smaller terrace offering a beautiful panorama onto the surrounding village and hills; if you are in its Western part, you'll enjoy the light and colours of sunset; visiting the Northern part, you'll find a door giving way to the foot of the main tower (the fortress of Carlux was listed Historical Monument in 1927).
Carlux' history is linked with that of the Viscounty of Turenne; the first written traces of it date back to 1153, the first written traces of the fortress date back to 1251. Destructed and rebuilt many times due to numerous political and war events, the fortress still dominates the village. Between 1840 and 1850, it was smashed open to create the road from Salignac to the Dordogne river in Rouffillac. In 1940, a cracked tower overhanging the road was destroyed.
Carlux, a nice village indeed, is also a place of friendly welcome and traditional celebrations, and an ideal stopover to start discovering our beautiful region.
