The charm of Domme is undeniable, there is a special atmosphere, quiet and calm that soothes the soul as well as an exceptional view over the valley of the Dordogne, which reveals both the Chateau de Montfort, the village of La Roque and Gageac, and the Beynac Castle.
But chance has offered many other treasures to Domme, that you can discover during one of our guided tours:
For lovers of discovery, a natural 20-m deep and 450-m long cave extends under the village. It consists of a string of rooms revealing to the visitor one after the other in a rare profusion of crystals. A panoramic lift located on the cliff side takes you back to the village. Discovered in 1912 by children, this jewel of nature slept in the hollow of the cliff since its inception in prehistoric times.
Thousands of years later, unfortunate Templars were put in prison, awaiting death, in the Towers Gate. Their fate and their faith drove them to engrave on the walls of their cells more or less mysterious testimonies, that make this former prison a unique site to be visited. Iconographic reading of these signs and the interpretation thereof, will leave noone indifferent.
Another few hundred years later, long before the reign of electrical machines, our grandparents lived hard and steep lives through the streets of Domme. The Museum situated Place de la Halle will lead you to their world so close and yet so far. A multitude of objects of "yesteryear" will lead your kids to discover what their great grand-parents experienced in their youth. A unique opportunity to share memories, to relive the past and to perpetuate the history...
It was around 1281 that King Philip III, called The Bold, decided to set a bastide on this cliff overlooking the Dordogne river. The country house was built to the standards of the time, that is to say, a regular plan of streets intersecting at right angles, squares, square etc. Halle. ...
Through the restoration, this country house has survived and still shows Today its rich past.
Although prehistoric times has left many traces it is mainly through the middle ages that Domme had its most exciting hours. The various episodes of the 100 years war are still visible among the yellow stones and Domme has been built on so high a cliff because enemy threats were so numerous.
Domme is a remarkable site, namely due to its most impressive ruins of military aspect . Indeed, the walls that surround the village and the various doors that allow access, are still widely present in an extraordinary state of preservation. The most impressive is surely the Towers Gate, which demonstrates how the king wished to confuse potential attackers by imposing aesthetic constraints to the builders of the fortifications.
