ocated in the North-Eastern part of Dordogne, the department that borders on
Corrèze and Haute-Vienne, this massive château was built upon an ancient Roman camp, dominating a magnificent region, as a hinge between Limousin and Aquitaine.
During the XIIth century, it was the stake of rivalry between the famous troubadour Bertran de Born and his brother Constantin for the succession to King of England Henry II Plantagenêt.

n 1588, during the Wars of Religion, the fortress underwent modifications. Surrounded by flowery terraces that have been classified as a Historical Monument, first Garden of Aquitaine and one of the most beautiful gardens in France, Hautefort harmoniously combines medieval defences with a classic main building.
It was erected between 1630 and 1670 by order of the Marquis de Hautefort, who wished to honour his sister Marie, secretly loved by King Louis XIII.
