![]() Just as Saint-Yrieix 12 kilometres away, Château de Jumilhac used to act as a line of defence on the edge of Périgord and Limousin during the Saracens, Visigoths, Normans and English (1190) incursions, and during the Hundred Year War. It was therefore rebuilt and enlarged many times, but the roofs that made it so famous only appeared during Renaissance times (1600). Jumilhac, with its cones, pepper-boxes, and pyramids adorned with dormer windows weaving segniorial allegories (unique in France), deserves to be called the "Perle Noire" of Haut Périgord. |

During the XVII century, the outer walls, the advanced defence pavilions, and the
outbuildings were turned into a sumptuous main building for receptions, thus giving splendour and magnificence to Marquis
de Jumilhac's mansion. The great wood-panelled lounge, with a parquet floor "à la Versailles", enliven with hunting
scenes, the magnificent Louis XIII stairs, the terrace gardens, the museum of gold and alchemy, all contrast with the austere
atmosphere of the "Chambre de la Fileuse" in the feudal dungeon, where Louise de Hautefort was incarcerated during 30 years.
