Museums, archeological sites to be visited in the Dordogne Périgord,![]() |
the center of the antique city of Périgueux,
near the Tower of Vesone and next to the Roman lower-empire ramparts, the museum designed by the famous international architect Jean Nouvel protects and displays all remains
of a major Gallo-Roman villa with beautiful wall paintings: the domus of Vésone.
Vesunna, the antique Perigueux city founded in 16 before Christ, is the most renown Gallo-Roman city in Aquitaine. In the ground adjoining the Tower of Vesone, the heart of the great temple, the walls of a very big house called "Domus of Vesone" were discovered in 1959. This site rapidly became famous due to its size (approx. 4000 sqm), to the height of the walls (approx. 1 m) and to its exceptional wall paintings. |
